Bridlington Weekend 2010

The Bridlington Weekend – April 16th to 19th 2010

The weekend started on Friday afternoon, for those lucky enough to not be working, with the Golf Tournament, the Ten Pin Bowling Competition and the Walking Treasure Hunt. All three events were very much enjoyed by those who took part, particularly because of the brilliant sunshine that arrived Friday and stayed all weekend.

The annual dinner was eaten by around 750 members and was of Carrot & Coriander Soup, Roast Loin of Pork and a desert of Apple Flan with Sticky Toffee Sauce. After suitably brief speeches, we adjourned to the Spa Theatre for one of two outstanding musical performances, “Les Musicals”, provided by Take 2 Theatre Company.  Running alongside both performances was a rousing Sing Song, led by Alan Makinson at the piano.

The workshops on Saturday morning were very much appreciated by the people who attended and even the most experienced of us learned something new. As ever the Movement workshop drew a large crowd to the Royal Hall, where Louise Denison taught a hectic routine to “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, from Hairspray. There were two limited number workshops – “There is Nothing Like a Dame”, a pantomime workshop, in fond memory of our own Maureen Parkinson (RIP) led by Paul Laidlaw and “Instant Musical”, led by Jim Paterson. At the former Paul used “volunteers” to demonstrate some of the techniques for a successful pantomime – Oh yes he did !! And at Jim’s workshop he created a musical based around Les Miserables in the two hour session.  The final session of the morning, was the Open Forum, with the President, NE Councillor and Deputy Chief Executive Officer.

The NE Regional Committee with Councillor Chris Ingram, NODA President, Margaret Coltman are joined by our Civic Guests – Chairman or ERYC, Councillor Chris Matthews and Mrs Marilyn Matthews and Leader of ERYC Councillor Stephen Parnaby and Mrs Celia Parnaby.

The Annual General Meeting in the afternoon was the only formal part of the weekend but was far from serious and starchy !! Councillor Chris Ingram gave an update on the goings on in the NE over the last year, President Margaret Coltman told us about her time so far in office and Stuart Dick, Deputy CEO and IT/Finance manager from HQ, brought all the latest news from Peterborough.

The two performances of the cabaret in the theatre at 6.00 pm and 7.30 pm was “Get This Party Started” by Harrogate St Andrews Players and they most certainly did !!  This was a fabulous show, full of music and humour, that gave us songs from shows that ranged from Avenue Q to Hairspray, and most things in between.

To some, the highlight of the weekend is the Annual Ball in the Royal Hall with Todd Miller and the Joe Loss Orchestra. And Todd certainly didn’t disappoint and he had a full dance floor right through until 1 am.

The Grumbleweeds strut their stuff on Sunday morning

On Sunday morning we gathered in the Royal Hall for the presentations to the winners of the Regional programme & poster competitions, the Regional Summer School Bursaries and the Friday afternoon competitions. However this was simply the warm up act for one of the funniest Sunday morning sessions in many years – The Grumbleweeds. Graham and Robin gave us an hilarious hour of comedy, including a very passable Cher impression, even incorporating our own Margueritte Jennings in the act !!  (By the way, did you know that Leeds Thespians used to rehearse in Robin’s Mother’s cellar ?!) For the majority of people the weekend culminated in the usual rendition of “Jerusalem”. But that wasn’t the end of the weekend – we were entertained later in the afternoon by the Shepherd Group Concert Band, complete with cream tea.

The winners and runners up in the Programme and Poster Competition with their Awards and three of four NODA Summer School Bursary recipients, (Lto R)Sandra Carlisle (York Light); Charlotte Appleyard (Wakefield West Riding OS) and Georgina Hale (Manor Operatic Society)

And that concluded another fabulous and SUNNY Bridlington weekend.
